Making your account accessible

We think of a building or stairs is usually when we think of accessibility. It is equally important in digital media because everyone should be able to access social media accounts, but many are unable to do so.

Some tips to make it accessible:

Add subtiltles to your vidoes, reels and TikToks

On TikTok, go to create your video in TikTok, then tap the Captions button, let it process, and that’s it!

On Instagram, go to Reels. Upload your video, then go to stickers and tap captions. You can edit them if you want.

Add ALT text

According to hubspot ", alt text is the written copy that appears in place of an image on a webpage if the image fails to load on a user's screen."

When you're at the caption screen on Instagram, go to advanced settings, then alt text, and write your alt text. Keep your alt text short and sweet like a tweet, don't include an image of or photo of, and don't include it at all if it is decorative.

Multiple Slides

When creating a post with multiple slides, add the text from the post in the comments by doing something like {Slide 1} {Slide 2} and so on.

Capitalize each word of the Hastag or hastags

Capitalizing hastags allows screen readers to correctly read each letter.

Example: #ArtistSupport #ArtistSupportPost #ThisIsANewTagForArtists

Add image descriptions to captions

Keep it objective because everyone should be able to form their own opinion about it; keep it concise so they can understand it; and descriptive so they will be able to form a picture.

Add flash warnings to videos that contain flashing lights, or anything flashing

It is important to add a flash warning because flashing lights can trigger seizures, and some people get triggered by them.
